What is the Shoei Z-9?
The Shoei Z-9 is Shoei's new compact, lightweight sports full-face helmet, designed for sports touring and general road riding rather than as a pure race helmet. It uses a redesigned shell with centralised upper air intakes integrated into the Shoei logo area, and rib shapes that flow from the intake back toward the rear for cleaner airflow.
Is the Z-9 the same as the Shoei NXR3?
Most likely, yes. Shoei uses the Z-series name in Japan and the NXR name in Europe, so the Z-8 is sold as the NXR2 in Europe. How aerodynamic is the Z-9?
Shoei's wind tunnel testing shows the Z-9 reduces lift by approximately 13 percent and drag by approximately 3 percent compared with the previous Z-8. That means a more stable, less tiring helmet at speed, which is exactly what sports touring riders want on long, fast rides.
How good is the ventilation?
The Z-9 uses four upper intake holes positioned centrally, and Shoei says the upper intake achieves around 1.9 times the airflow of the previous model's front and upper intakes combined. The lower intakes use flap-style shutters with about 1.4 times more airflow than before, so you get strong, controllable ventilation for warm conditions.
What is the visor system like?
The Z-9 carries over the proven CWR-F2 visor system with a centre lock and a micro-opening position. Shoei has added an enlarged lock button and, importantly, an adjustment lever that lets you fine-tune the visor seal by around 1mm for a better seal against wind and water.
An anti-fog sheet is included as standard with a wide coverage area and rearward-positioned pins for a clean field of view.
Is the Z-9 quieter?
Yes, quietness was a key focus. The Z-9 uses vortex generators on the visor and ear pads with perforated plates to cut wind noise, so it should be a calmer, more comfortable helmet on the motorway.
How is the interior and fit?
The Z-9 uses a hybrid liner, with moisture-absorbing quick-drying fabric in the sweat areas and a softer brushed fabric near the opening, finished with red stitching and accents. The full cheek pads use two types of dirt-resistant, leather-like material, and the E.Q.R.S. Emergency Quick Release System lets responders remove the cheek pads quickly after a crash.
