KTM’s Supersport Comeback — The Production-Ready 990 RC R Arrives

KTM has kicked the doors back open to supersport with the production-ready 990 RC R, a bike that effectively picks up where the RC8 left off. After a decade focused on naked and adventure machines, the orange brand is returning to fully-faired performance with a package that’s race-bred but street-ready.

The Hardware: LC8c Muscle, Purpose-Built Chassis
At the heart of the 990 RC R is KTM’s LC8c parallel twin, now tuned to deliver 130hp and 103Nm—more than the current 990 Duke’s 123hp—while keeping weight tight and responses sharp. The engine sits in a purpose-built steel chassis with a diecast aluminium subframe, designed for front-end feel under braking and stability at corner exit without dulling agility.

Stopping and Steering Confidence
Brembo Hypure four-piston calipers handle braking, while WP APEX suspension keeps the platform poised on road and circuit. KTM’s aerodynamic work from its motorsport programs is baked in, adding stability without sacrificing flickability.

Electronics and Interface: Big Brain, Big Dash
A standout feature is the sizable 8.8-inch TFT, offering Rain, Street, Sport, and Custom ride modes out of the box. Optional Track mode and two additional custom slots broaden the setup for more aggressive days. Riders can access telemetry like lean angle and throttle opening rates, plus four ABS modes—Street, Sport, Supermoto, and Supermoto+—to tailor intervention to conditions and skill.

Ergonomics That Fit the Pace
Despite the aggressive stance, KTM promises supportive ergonomics for knees, arms, and hands. Adjustable footrests help dial in fit for taller or shorter riders. A hefty 16-litre tank hints at serious sessions without constant fuel stops. Two colourways—orange or black—keep the look classically KTM.

Where It Competes
On paper, the 990 RC R squares up against the Kawasaki ZX-6R, Ducati Panigale V2, Yamaha R9, and Honda CBR600RR—each bringing its own character. KTM’s twin-cylinder torque and data-rich electronics could make it the everyday-friendly option that doesn’t flinch at a track day.

Track-Spec Version Incoming
KTM will launch a dedicated track-spec variant in early February 2026. Expect a pared-back dashboard, focused electronics, ABS modulator delete with direct brake lines, a track-optimized gearbox, and more to be revealed when full technical details drop. Crucially, KTM says this isn’t just a street bike with race accessories—it’s built with the circuit as its first language.

Why This Matters
For riders who missed KTM’s supersport DNA, the 990 RC R is a statement: the brand’s Ready to Race ethos is back in a fairing. With performance figures that matter, real chassis development, and electronics that teach as much as they assist, this bike is positioned to make both Sunday blasts and apex-chasing sessions more rewarding.

Availability
Production begins this month, with orders through authorized KTM dealers. If you’ve been waiting for a modern, data-savvy supersport that blends punch and practicality, the 990 RC R might be the long-awaited return you were hoping for.
